Community Builders Chicago

Community Builders, Chicago (CBC) is a group of community activists engaged in facilitating the social and economic development of the Muslim community in Chicago. The group has been in existence since 2003. We believe that in order to promote our interests in America we need to establish more than Mosques and Islamic Schools in our communities. We feel that there is a need to establish institutions that will serve the social, political and economic needs of our community as well. Such institutions could be in the area of health care, business, finance, social welfare, media, public policy, philanthropy, etc.

CBC's Career Shadowing Program: Summer 2010

In the good old days young people interested in pursuing a trade or a vocation would do an apprenticeship in a field of their interest, under the guidance of a master till they had learnt enough to embark upon their independent ventures. With the advent of modern educational institutions this career building process has unfortunately become obsolete. Much of career counseling is now done on paper with little hands on experience involved in the making of life long choices. Sometimes such decisions could lead to frustrations when what was perceived may not match up with what turns out to be real.

In order to facilitate the making of good career choices and give young people an opportunity to try out different careers, before making a selection, CBC is initiating a Career Shadowing Program this summer for students in High School and College. The program will be open from June 15 through August 30, 2010. Students will be allowed to shadow from one day to one week and will be expected to provide their own transportation. The following career shadowing opportunities will be available:

Physician
Attorney
Accountant
Engineer
IT Consultant
Dentist
Chiropractor
Journalist
Radio Host
Community Organizer
Graphic Designer
Nurse Practitoner
Pharmacist
Para Legal
Financial Consultant
Realtor
Insurance Agent
Social Worker
Family Counselor

Enrollment fee is $10 per student, payable to CBC.

Road Ahead for Community Builders

(Comments delivered at the 5th Annual Community Builders Convention, May 31, 2010, Holiday Inn, Skokie.)

Some eight years ago we embarked upon a daunting journey to bring about a change in the lives of our people. As we looked around us then we saw widespread apathy, an absent sense of purpose, a lack of motivation to excel and a resigned attitude to live in the average. We saw an unusual preoccupation with either the politics of distant lands or the politics of our local centers. We saw people operating through hidden agendas. We saw people fearful and intimated from the fallout of 9/11, unwilling to engage and participate in the affairs of their neighborhoods. Community Builders came into existence to change some of this through a process of education and promoting the works and ideas of those with similar vision and similar goals.

The Year that was 2009

Another year has come and gone. For some it went too fast, for others perhaps not fast enough. For all though this was a year that would be remembered.

It was a year in which we were privileged to have been witnesses to history
